Creation, Day 7 (Sunday School Lesson)

Sunday School Lesson
October 9, 2016

Theme: “Creation Day 7”

I.         Entry Task/Snack Activity (5 minutes): All children will be greeted and welcomed at the door by an adult teacher. Children will then be directed to quietly enter the room and find a seat at one of the tables where they will have a small snack and work on entry task Encourage children to use small, quiet voices as they eat and work.

II.       Gather Time (2 minute) Ring the chime found on the altar table: Teachers will invite all children to find a place on the “Gathering Carpet” for group check-in and discussion. Welcome all children

III.     Church Practice-Instruction in common church practices and basic terms. (3 minutes) Teacher will ask children to identify the liturgical season the church is celebrating by looking at the color (green, purple, white or red) of the cloth on the classroom altar. Encourage children to take note of the altar frontal in “Big Church” and see that it is also dressed in the same liturgical colors. Light the candles on the classroom altar and explain to children that lit candles are a symbol to remind us of the presence of the Holy Spirit who is always with us. (Children will learn about other symbols used in the church as the year progresses.) Encourage children to take notice of the candles in “Big Church.” After the candles are lit, take the Bible and show children the two parts, old and new testament. As stories are read, identify where we are finding the Bible story before it is read aloud.

IV.      Bible Lesson (10 minutes) (All materials for the lesson will be found in the red basket placed on the class altar.)
A.  Introduction: In the last several weeks we have talked about God’s creation. Let’s review the first six days. (Pick six different children to stand up and hold one of the “Days of Creation” cards as you review.) On the seventh day of creation what do you think God did after all of that work? (Hold up the final “Creation” card.) God rested.
B.  Bible Reference Let’s read the Creation story one more time from our Children’s Bible. (Read from the Jesus Storybook Bible pages 18-27.
Now I will read about the last day of creation from the book of Genesis.
2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

A.  Response: God’s creation is so good as God himself said after each day, On the seventh day of creation, God took time to rest. He called the seventh day holy and made it a Sabbath day or a day to rest and enjoy creation. God gave us all of creation and put us in charge of taking care of every living thing as well as the heavens and the earth. It is great work to take care of creation with God. God also wants us to take the time to rest and enjoy creation. When we take the time to rest, to slow down from our busy lives, to enjoy our world around us, we experience God’s creation as he wanted for us to enjoy it. Let’s some ways in which we can have a “Sabbath day,” a day of rest, a day of enjoying God’s creation? (Allow answers and write them down on chart paper.) These are all wonderful ideas!
B.  Pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your creation from light to every creature that lives upon the earth. Help us to take care of your creation and to always see it’s goodness that you planned from the very beginning. Help us to take the time to have a “Sabbath Day” so that we may rest and enjoy your creation. Amen

C.  Response Activity: (10-12 minutes) Children will complete a craft activity to take home.

V.        Closing and Dismissal: (3 minutes) Teachers will invite children to clean up and come back to the “Gathering Carpet” for prayer before dismissal
C.  Pray: The Lord’s Prayer (Say together.)

D.  Dismissal: One teacher stands at the door to greet parents as they pick up their children. Children will remain in the carpet until their parent comes.

Made in His Image

I.         Entry /Snack (5 minutes): All children will be greeted and welcomed at the door by an adult teacher. Children will then be directed to quietly enter the room and find a seat at one of the tables where they will have a small snack. Encourage children to use small, quiet voices as they talk with their friends. This beginning time allows time for fellowship and sets the tone for a calm, peaceful environment.

II.       Gather Time (3-5 minutes) Ring the chime found on the altar table: Teachers will invite all children to find a place on the “Gathering Carpet” for group check-in and discussion. Welcome each friend as they say his/her name.

III.     Bible Lesson (12-15 minutes)
A.  Introduction: In the last couple of weeks we have been talking about God’s creation from the very beginning. (Using Creation Picture Cards Review the Days of Creation up through Day 5) Let’s review the days of God’s Creation. (For each day of creation, pick a child to hold up the card in front of the group.) Today we will read the rest of the Creation story. Let’s listen.
B.  Bible Reference (Read from the Jesus Storybook Bible pp 25-27.)

A.  Response: On the sixth day of creation God made man and woman and he made them in his image. I wonder, what is an image? (Allow answers.) You are right! An image is a picture or a a likeness of someone or something. God made human beings, you and me, in his image, which means we are like God. This does not mean that we are God, but rather we are like God. In the Bible it says that God is love. If we are like God, we are also created to be love in the world. God made each one of us in his image and placed very special gifts from him in each one of us so that he could shine his light through us to be love in the world. Who can tell me again the very first thing that God created? Light! Yes, God created light. Do you remember who is God’s light in the world? (allow answers.) Yes! Jesus is the God’s light in the world. Jesus has always been in the world from the very beginning as the light and Jesus continues to be the light of the world. Because God loves us so much, Jesus was born as a human being to live among us. Through Jesus we know God’s love more fully. As we trust in God, he shines his light through us to be love in the world. We are strengthened by God’s love to be able to care for all of God’s creation.

B.  Response Activity: (15 minutes) Today we are going to make a “image” of ourselves. I will give you this little paper doll and you will color it to look like you.

I.         Closing and Dismissal: (3 minutes) Teachers will invite children to clean up and come back to the “Gathering Carpet” for prayer and a benediction before dismissal. One teacher stand at the door to greet parents as they pick up their children. Children will remain in the carpet until their parent comes.
A.  Pray: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your creation from light to every creature that lives upon the earth. Help us to take care of your creation and to always see it’s goodness that you planned from the very beginning. Amen
B.  The Lord’s Prayer (Say together.)
C.  Benediction: Let us go in peace to love and serve the Lord. (All) Thanks be to God!
